My journey began on March 19th, 2007 when I flew to Beijing and stayed at Gloria Plaza Hotel with 10 Tokyo Tech students and 2 Tokyo Tech professors. At the same day, we had a short briefing with several UNESCO staffs at the UNESCO Beijing office. I (as Tokyo Tech team representative) was presenting our plans, objectives, and expectations from this program. We (11 students and 2 professors) got scholarships from ACCU (Asia/Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO) for this trip, meaning, we didn't pay anything except for visa in this field visit.

Before I go further, maybe I should tell you a bit about the program itself. I know it would be very long, but I'll try to make it as short as possible (I took some part of the introduction section in our report to ACCU).

Banyaknya beasiswa yang ditawarkan kepada lulusan2 Indonesia untuk meraih gelar S1, S2, ataupun S3 di luar negeri memang menyedot banyak "high-quality human resource" dari Indonesia.. Beasiswa-beasiswa tersebut tentunya diberikan untuk orang-orang yang "high-qualified", melalui wawancara dan tes-tes lainnya.. Nah, setelah sampai di luar negeri dan meraih gelar, apa yang harus dilakukan? Segera balik ke Indonesia dan membangun bangsa, atau kerja di luar negeri dulu untuk cari pengalaman dan modal? 

Menurut saya itu kembali ke pribadi masing-masing.. Kedua option itu baik (selama tetap ada kata-kata "untuk Indonesia"). Yang tidak baik menurut pandangan saya adalah kalau para "high-qualified Indonesian" itu bekerja di luar negeri, dan prioritas utamanya hanya "menikmati upah yang didapat" yang tentunya sangat besar dibandingkan dengan upah pekerja di Indonesia, tanpa idealisme "membangun Indonesia".
